Mrs. Betty Jane Jackson Collins
IRWINTON – Mrs. Betty Jane Jackson Collins, age 86 passed away peacefully at her childhood home in Wilkinson County on Saturday, June 18, 2016 after an extended illness.
Mrs. Collins was the daughter of the late Julian Charles (J.C.) and Evelyn Tidwell Jackson. She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Joseph Glynn Collins, as well as by her 4 brothers, Cecil, Gene, Joe Ben, and Butch Jackson, and her sister Sue Jackson Slappy.
Betty and Glynn Collins married in 1948 and lived in Macon for 14 years and briefly in Atlanta and Dalton, before moving to Vidalia in 1966 when Glynn became a partner with his brother Edward, in Collins Dental Lab. They resided in Vidalia for 35 years before moving back to the Jackson farm in Wilkinson County. Betty was a Girl Scout leader in Vidalia for many and went with two troops on their trips to Our Chalet in Switzerland and tours of other European countries.
Betty worked as a secretary during her early married life. She later returned to school and graduated from Brewton-Parker College, Georgia Southern University, and received a Masters of Social Work from the University of Georgia. She retired as the Director of the Wheeler County Department of Family and Children’s Services.
Survivors include her daughter, Judy Lynn Collins Hale, and her husband Thomas Judson. A Grandson, Lt. Judson Collins Hale, and his wife Lisa. Great Grandson, William Robert Hale. Sister in law, Velma Crozier Jackson, brother in law, Andrew Slappy, plus several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Mrs. Collins will be held on Saturday June 25, at 2:00PM at New Providence Baptist Church in Jeffersonville, with family visitation at the church beginning at 1:00PM. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Dr. Kenneth Keene and Rev. Thomas Graham will be officiating.
